Falls prevention program for seniors in Malvern

Falls Prevention & Balance Training Services

Falls are one of the most common, and most preventable, causes of injury for adults over 60 in Malvern and the surrounding suburbs. Yet many older adults aren’t sure where to start or who to see.

At Summit Health Group’s Malvern clinic, our accredited exercise physiologists design a supervised falls prevention program specifically for seniors. These aren’t gym classes or aqua aerobics. They’re clinical programs built around the specific physical systems that control your balance, and they’re proven to reduce falls risk by 40 to 50 per cent.

This article explains what a falls prevention program actually involves, who it’s for, and what you can expect from our team in Malvern.

Why falls prevention matters for seniors in Malvern

Falls are the leading cause of injury hospitalisation for adults over 65 in Australia. For someone with low bone density, a single fall can mean a hip or wrist fracture, surgery and a long recovery, and in many cases a permanent loss of independence.

But it isn’t just the falls themselves that cause harm. Fear of falling is just as damaging. Many older adults become less active because they’re afraid of losing their balance, which causes their strength and balance to decline further, increasing fall risk and creating a downward cycle.

A structured falls prevention program addresses both: the physical capacity that prevents falls in the first place, and the confidence that lets you move freely without fear.

What a falls prevention program actually involves

Our Malvern falls prevention program is built around the specific systems your body uses to balance.

Strength, particularly in the legs, hips and core. Strong muscles let you recover when you start to lose balance.

Vestibular function, the inner ear system that detects head position. We use exercises that train and challenge this system safely.

Proprioception, your body’s awareness of where it is in space. We address this with controlled balance exercises on different surfaces.

Vision and gaze stability, which is important for staying steady on uneven ground or in low light.

Gait, or how you walk. We assess and address stride length, foot placement and walking pattern.

Each of these is addressed with specific exercises, progressed over time as your capacity improves. The program is also designed around your individual situation, including any medical conditions, previous falls, medications, and what you want to be able to do in daily life.

Why an exercise physiologist, not a gym, yoga class or walking group

Walking, yoga and gym training all have benefits. But none of them is specifically designed to reduce falls risk. A general fitness class doesn’t assess your vestibular function. A yoga class doesn’t train your reactive balance under varied conditions. A walking group doesn’t progressively challenge your gait under controlled conditions.

A clinical falls prevention program does all of these things. An accredited exercise physiologist (AEP) holds a four to five year university degree in clinical exercise physiology and is trained to assess and address the specific systems involved in balance.

That’s why a falls prevention program designed by an AEP produces measurable, evidence-based reductions in fall risk, and a generic exercise class does not.

What to expect from your first appointment in Malvern

Your first session at our Malvern clinic is a full falls risk assessment. We assess:

  • Gait analysis, or how you walk.
  • Balance and stability testing, including standing on one leg, narrow stances and soft surfaces.
  • Strength and flexibility screening, particularly the hips, legs and core.
  • Posture evaluation.
  • Functional mobility, including sit-to-stand, step-ups and turning.
  • A discussion of your fall history and any current concerns.
  • A medication and health review.

This gives us a clear picture of which systems need the most support, and it lets us design a program that’s highly personalised, safe and specifically targeted at your falls risk.

What results can you expect?

Within four to six weeks of consistent attendance, most clients notice improvements in confidence. They feel less wobbly, less afraid and more willing to move freely. Those early changes are important because they break the fear-of-falling cycle.

Over three to six months, measurable improvements occur in balance test scores, strength, gait quality and reaction time. Clients often report walking on uneven ground with confidence, getting in and out of chairs more easily, and feeling secure in busy environments.

Ongoing weekly attendance is what sustains these changes. Balance and strength decline with age, so maintaining them takes ongoing exercise rather than a one-off course. This is why ongoing exercise physiology produces lasting results.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I attend a falls prevention program?

Most clients attend once a week. Consistency is what produces lasting reductions in fall risk. A handful of sessions isn’t enough to meaningfully change balance and strength, which adapt over months of consistent practice.

Will a falls prevention program actually reduce my fall risk?

Yes. Research consistently shows that structured falls prevention programs designed by accredited exercise physiologists reduce falls risk by 40 to 50 per cent in older adults. The key word is structured. Generic exercise classes don’t produce the same outcomes.

Is the program safe if I’ve already had a fall?

Yes. In fact it’s particularly recommended after a fall. Your exercise physiologist will design the program around your current capacity, any injuries and your confidence level. Programs start where you are and progress at your pace.

Do I need a referral to start?

No. You can contact our Malvern clinic directly. We’re a private-pay clinic and you can book your first appointment at any time.

How much does the program cost?

Call our Malvern clinic on (03) 9576 3216 for current session pricing. We’re a private-pay clinic and don’t bulk bill.

Falls aren’t an inevitable part of ageing. With the right program, designed by someone who understands the specific physical systems involved in your balance, you can significantly reduce your fall risk, restore your confidence and stay independent. It is all part of staying strong and independent for life.
